The mistakes that cost founders thousands when hiring.
For many founders, hiring can feel intimidating.
Maybe you’ve hired someone before and it didn’t work out. Maybe you’ve heard stories about unreliable freelancers. Or maybe you’ve convinced yourself that building a team is too expensive.
The truth is, none of those things have to define your experience.
Whether you’re hiring for the first time or looking for a better approach, building a great team is completely possible—and it can be done at a price that fits your budget.
Great talent exists everywhere. Your next team member might live down the street, across the country, or halfway around the world. Whether they’re in the United States, the Philippines, India, China, or anywhere else, what matters most isn’t where they live—it’s finding the right person for your business.
The first mindset every founder needs is this:
Believe your team player exists.
Someone out there has the skills, attitude, and desire to help take your business to the next level. Don’t let past disappointments or limiting beliefs stop you from looking.
Once you’ve removed those mental barriers, the hiring process becomes much simpler.
Now let’s walk through five simple steps.
1. Know What You Need
Before you hire anyone, get clear on what you’re asking them to do.
Write down the tasks that take up your time, drain your energy, or keep you from focusing on growing your business. The more specific you are, the easier it is to find someone who can take ownership of that work.
Remember—you aren’t hiring a person first. You’re solving a problem.
2. Find the Right Talent
Amazing people are everywhere.
Some founders prefer hiring locally, while others build incredible remote teams across the globe. We’ve had great experiences using Upwork and Fiverr, and they’re two of our favorite places to find talented professionals in nearly every specialty.
Don’t focus only on price. Look for someone who communicates well, has positive reviews, and genuinely cares about doing great work.
3. Start Small
You don’t have to hire someone full-time on day one.
Start with a small paid project that reflects the type of work they’ll eventually own. This lets you evaluate communication, quality, attention to detail, and reliability before making a larger commitment.
A great partnership is built over time.
4. Set Clear Expectations
Even the best team members can’t read your mind.
Provide clear instructions, explain what success looks like, and document your process with simple checklists or short SOP videos whenever possible.
The clearer your expectations are, the more confident your team member will be—and the better results you’ll get.
5. Build a Long-Term Partnership
The goal isn’t simply to hire someone to complete tasks.
The goal is to buy back your time.
As trust grows, your team can take ownership of more responsibilities, allowing you to spend more time leading your business, serving customers, creating new ideas, and enjoying life outside of work.
That’s what building leverage is all about.
